Caps, NHL Start Planning

The best part of today's NHL schedule release was the fact that fans and players alike have something to look forward to come the fall. The bad part is that live hockey that matters is still more than two months away.

But there's still time to start analyzing the slate. The games that jump out:

1. The obvious: Pittsburgh will visit Feb. 22 and March 8.
2. The odd: Olie Kolzig and Jeff Halpern return to Verizon Center as members of the Tampa Bay Lightning on Nov. 10, Jan. 1, and March 27.
3. The strangers: The Caps' first two home games are against Western Conference opponents (Chicago on Oct. 11 and Vancouver on Oct. 13). Nashville (with former GM David Poile) visits on Oct. 28. The other Westerners to visit this season are St. Louis (Dec. 18), Columbus (Jan. 9), Edmonton (Jan. 13), Detroit (Jan. 31), L.A. (Feb. 5) and Colorado (Feb. 20).
4. The reunion: The Caps and Flyers meet four times this season: Dec. 20 and Feb. 24 at Verizon; Jan. 6 and March 12 in Philly.
5. The return: Ovie returns to Phoenix for the first time since scoring "The Goal" on Jan. 16, 2006. This season's date: Oct. 23.
