The Caps' top defensive duo of Mike Green and Shaone Morrisonn go together, as the song goes, "like a wink and a smile." The two complement each other perfectly and, thanks to Green's new four-year contract and Morrisonn's impending deal through arbitration, it seems that will continue at least through next season.
The two first were paired when Bruce Boudreau took the reigns and immediately began to excel.
"I never had played with Shaone before that, so when we did play together, there was a connection right away and it's so easy to play with him," Green told STC. "We read off each other so well that things just worked out and it's been really good for us."
"We're both kinda opposite players. He's more offensive-minded and I'm more defensive," Morrisonn told STC. "It gives him the opportunity to go without worrying if his partner is going to be next to him up in the rush. I'm always back there for him and he's a great player to watch."
And clearly, Green is a better player with the man they call "Mo" around. In the 55 games they played together, Green scored 15 goals, registered 29 assists and was a plus-13. Without his trusty partner (six games), he only had five assists and was a plus-one. (Thanks to J.P. for the numbers.)
Morrisonn also admires Green's prowess.
"He sees the ice so well and he can skate so well and move," Morrisonn said. "He's very skilled in that position. It makes things easier, even if he gets caught, he's always fast enough to get back and help out. He's been great. It's been a fun year."
And the feeling is mutual.
"Probably the one of the best 'D' partner I've ever had," Green said.
Caps' fans now can sit back and watch as the two continue to prosper.
