First CLS Pick: Nicklas Backstrom

With the CLS draft in high gear, it became obvious that there was only one player with whom STC would start the fictitious Washington Capitals: Nicklas Backstrom. With Alex Ovechkin out of the running (going first overall), Backstrom is a no-brainer. And it's not just because he's already on the Caps.

As was documented in this space earlier in the season, Backstrom's assist totals in his first two years puts him in the same company with the all-time greats in NHL history. Furthermore, other than Ovechkin, Backstrom rises to the occasion more than anybody else on the team and is quickly becoming one of the Caps' leaders.

He plays in all situations and is never afraid of doing the little things to help the Caps win. So, therefore, it's an honor to keep "Backie" in the red, white, and blue.

And, no, everybody picked by STC in this draft will not be a current member of the Caps.

He's also a TINY cap hit, which will allow you to take an overpriced but good player when others might have to hesitate.
