It's easy to root for Rick Nash. So it was extra-pleasing when news of his eight-year, $62 million contract extension came about. Not only does it give the Columbus Blue Jackets' captain some job security, it also shows that the franchise is committed to winning and growing.
Last year, Nash (40 goals, 39 assists) led the Jackets (41-31-10, 92 points) to their first playoff berth. Although they were swept, 4-0, by the Detroit Red Wings, the franchise has grown exponentially and could be on the verge of something special.
Goalie Steve Mason (33-20-7, 2.29 GAA, NHL-high 10 shutouts) won the Calder Trophy (rookie of the year) and finished second to Boston's Tim Thomas in voting for the Vezina Trophy (best goalie).
Granted, the team isn't loaded with offensive talent but Ken Hitchcock is the perfect coach for that franchise and has created a system in which the Jackets thrive. The team now needs to return to the playoffs for the second straight year and try to win a postseason game for the first time.
It might not be a meteoric ascent in Columbus, but Nash's signing shows that the Jackets mean business. And that's a good thing for the city and, quite frankly, the entire NHL.
